Getting to Rethimnon from Iraklion Airport

Outside the airport terminal there is a large grassy roundabout. Buses into town leave from a kiosk and bus shelter on the far left side of the roundabout 50 metres from the terminal. This location is likely to be moved with all the new construction. The bus fare into Iraklion in 1993 was 110 drm. and the buses run at ten minute intervals between 07.00 and 19.00 hours. You must buy your ticket from the kiosk here before getting on to the bus. Take all your luggage into the bus with you.

The airport bus passes through extensive concrete suburbs before entering the old city of Iraklion along O. Ikarou, turning sharply to climb up the side of the city wall into Plateia Eleftherias. If you are in a hurry, get off this bus as soon as the big bastion of Sabionera is visible and a sign to the right points to the harbour. The quickest way from Plateia Eleftherias to the main bus station is to walk north, towards the sea, outside the bastion. A left turn at the end of Sabionera bastion brings you within 25 yards of the east bound bus station. The west bound bus station is opposite this on the north side of a dual carriageway and alongside the new harbour. The bus station shown on many maps on O. Makariou is no longer in use.

Taxis line the roundabout at the airport but are a very expensive alternative to the bus.

Coaches for the package holidays wait right beside the door of the terminal.

Hire cars are also available at the terminal door but these are cheaper if booked in advance.
