Suitable first foods for a six month old baby.

Mashed ripe banana, avocado, apple, pear.

Cooked egg yolk, pureé of cottage cheese, pureé of chicken, pureé of boiled or steamed fish. Yoghurt without lumps.

Pureé of carrots, leeks, potato, cauliflower, lentils, parsnip, brown rice, or in any combination.

In each case the vegetables should be steamed or boiled without salt until soft, and then well mashed. A little formula milk can also be added to the pureé.

Do not give a coeliac baby rusks to chew, give sticks of carrot or apple.

Pancakes are very useful when a child is ready to move on to more solid food.

Sorghum flour is easily digested and it is mainly imported for the manufacture of baby foods.

One year onwards

As soon as a child can cope with a range of food flavours and textures, often before one year, you can use the wide range of recipes in this book. Still keep down the proportion of salt, sugar and fat in the diet but don't eliminate them.

A child needs a wide variety of foods for healthy growth. Don't restrict yourself to cooking a few of the easiest recipes, and use as wide a range of gluten-free ingredients as possible.

It is important that a child with the coeliac condition is not made to feel different from other children. It will help the child if all your family eat gluten-free meals including gluten-free cake and biscuits and, if you can, prepare gluten-free sausages and beefburgers so that they feel they are eating the same types of food as other children.
