my mother ha recently had a heart attack and ben found to be diabetic she is eating well but still losing weight.She used to eat a lot of sweet stuff bit has cut this right out would this be the reason for her to be losing the weight?Also can she still have the odd sweet treat

There is no simple answer to these questions. You say she is eating well, but losing weight - If she was overweight to start with and the weight loss is gradual, and she has more energy to do things then this is not a problem. Cutting out sweet things would normally result in weight loss. If she is underweight and the weight loss is serious and she has no energy to do things then a visit to the doctor is needed.
Sweet things are best avoided, try not to regard them as treats!
A lot depends on the level of diabetes and how it is being controlled
