 Bloodtest or biopsy  Posted by
Hi all,

since about a year I started to have chronic belly aches and things are gradually becoming worse. I have had all the possible tests and operations possible but they cannot seem to find where the pain comes from. Doctors also find my symptons very strange although I seem to recognise a lot of them looking on a gluten intolerance page. Apart from the chronic belly ache (burning sensation, left bottom side, near the ovaries), I have joint pain, tingling in fingers and feet, muscle cramps etc... . I also find that my symptons are getting really worse when I eat bread. Milk and yoghurt also do not seem to agree with me.

I have done a blood test last year but that came out negative. Someone told me that to be sure that you have the disease you need to do the biopsy. Is that true or should the blood test be sufficient?

thanks in advance!

Neither the blood test nor the biopsy are 100\% accurate, but work in most cases.

If the your doctor is at a loss, you would not lose anything by trying a totally gluten-free diet for a couple of months. Also avoid all milk and milk products to start with, but take calcium tablets and make sure you have a well balanced diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat and fish.

If you don't get any change after this period you will have confirmed at least that it is not a reaction to gluten.

I agree do the diet. That is what I did and I feel much better. Sometimes you just do it your body will tell you. The bloodtest you took must have been for just 12 hr. they do have one for 24 hr reaction however, most insurances will not cover it. Really do yourself a favor stay off all gluten for a month and see how you feel

I had the exact same symptoms as you for two years before they decided to do a biopsy which confirmed that I have celiac disease. The blood test had shown negative, this is apparently a-typical but it does happen, so insist on the biopsy just to be sure

Hello from California,

I just read an article about celiac disease which, up until two days ago, I had never heard of. I have had symptons which seem like IBS as well as GERD (acid reflux) for several years. Tests have been somewhat inconclusive as to what exactly causes the stomach pain, bloating, gas cramps, constipation/diarhea, joint pains, etc.. I've had all the stomach acid tests, hose jobs, etc. done several times. My main problem is lack of sleep caused by chest pain, pounding heart which wakes me up after 2-3 hours of sleep every night. I've had EKG's, treadmills, scans and other heart tests, which all show no problems with my heart. Has anyone experienced the pain at night trying to sleep with this disease?

Chuck

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME . SINCE 1996 IVE HAFD VERY LOOSE STOOLS. I HAD DIFFERENT TEST DONE, BUT WAS TOLD I HAD AN IRIRRITABLE BOWEL SYMDROME. LAST NOV. I GOT VERY SICK AN AFTER SEVEREAL DR. WENT BACK TO A GASTERLOSYS.ANYWAY HE DID FIND CRONES DIEASE. WHICH DIDNT SURPIZE ME.MY BROTHER HAS IT AND MY OTHER BROTHER HAS PROBLEMS TOO. ANYWAY IVE HAD EVERY TEST AND BLOODWORK . IVE LOST 40 LBS SINCE LATE NOV. AD I EAT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT, AND STILL LOSING. IFEEL GOOD. NO PAINS. MY DR. DID A BIOSPY, WJHILE HE WAS CHECKING TO SEE IF I HAD CRONES . HE SAID THE BIOSPY SHOWED I DIDNT HAVE CELIAC DIEASE. BUT I HAVE ALL SYMPTOMS. INCLUDING HE SAID I HAVE NO VILLS, FINGER LKE THAT HOLDS THE FOOD. MY STOOLS ARE JUST LIKE THE DIEASE SAY THEY ARE. AND GRESE, UNBELIVEABLE. IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE THAT BIOSPY AND NOT BE DETECTABLE. WHEN I SAY I MATCH THAT DIEASE TO A TEE, I MEAN IT. CAN YOU OFFER ANY ADVICE. IN FACT JUST TODAY I HAD TO HAVE ANOTHER LOWER BOWEL SERIES CAUSE HE THOUGHT THEY MIGHT OF MISSED SOMETHING. THATS WHERE THEY FOUND THE CRONES. SORR FOR THE MISTAKES TRYED TO CORRECT THEM AFTER AND IT WOULDNT .GO TO THE LINE I NEEDED TO CORRECT. THANK YOU

Re: Bloodtest or biopsy  Posted by
hello people,
i thought that i would pass this info on.i had suffered for years with what i was told was ulcers i went through terrible pains and discomforts and even has trouble eating lettuce.
then i had a bad asthma attack(it turned out loads of people had same in england at the time due to bad air) anyway i went to my doctor who had treated me for ulcers and as luck would have it he was not on call so i was seen by a new doctor.
who said he would treat the asthma with six a day steroids for 7 days and also prescribed a antibiotic for chest infection.
well the asthma stopped and i have not has a attack since but amazingly so did my ulcer troubles and since then i can eat anything without the slightest pain.
i hope you find this email helpful.

regards,
jeff

Has anyone heard of having a positive serum blood test and a negative biopsy? Thanks, June

Re Bloodtest or biopsy  Posted by Peter
A positive serum blood test shows that you have an immune reaction to the gluten and this should be avoided in your diet.

A negative biopsy may be because you have already reduced the gluten in your diet, or avoided it for some time. There are many cases where the biopsy is negative, but other symptoms are obvious - such as the skin rash.

With a positive serum blood test it is well worthwhile going on a totally gluten-free diet to see if your health improves.
