Chips,Salsa,Corn syrup

I have "very" recently been diagnosed with CD and am learning quite a lot about this disease. Besides dealing with depression over what I "can't" have--foods which I have always loved--I am trying to deal with this in a positive way. I recently called the Frito company and found that their Tostito Corn chips were gluten free. Also called the Pace Salsa company and found the salsa was gluten free. Thought I would pass this on. My question--does corn syrup contain gluten? I have seen this listed on labels and was not sure if I should get the product or not. Also, the list of okay foods on my doctor's list included Corn Pops cereal...is this okay? I just want to thank you (whoever started this chat area) for I learned quite a bit and it has helped my "down in the dumps" attitude to know I can come here and ask questions

Products made from maize such as corn syrup, corn pops, cornflakes are fine.
Do check the ingredients label on the packet or tin though, just in case anything else has been used.

Kelloggs has just started adding Wheat starch to Corn Pops. Be carefull!! If you want to express your frustration at this change go to www.kelloggs.com and email them your concerns. Maybe if everyone joins together we can get them to change it back

Cornflakes does contain malt extract, which will contain very tiny traces of gluten.
But you need to balance your need for a varied diet against the risks from tiny traces of gluten. There is a health risk from worry, as well as a health risk from eating too narrow a range of foods. On balance, I eat cornflakes.

Done! This should not be let to slide. Please, for the sake of our kids who have celiac, Kelloggs should be made to know that this is not a needed chance, and to change it back.

Kellogs corn pops are not gluten-free which, sadly, I discovered after eating it almost every morning for three months. No wonder the CD was not improving. It is even printed on the box warning label--now. It has wheat in it. Hope you have already heard this

I am very frustrated with dealing with this celiac disease diet.
Right now I would love to find some breakfast cereals I can eat!
Rice Krispies are out
Corn Pops are out
Corn Flakes are out
Krispex is out
The only thing I have found is Puff Rice!
It is my understanding that malt needs to be avoided. Why can't the manufacturers not use malt and in cereals such as Rice Krispies just don't put any wheat products in it?
Anyone know something out there I don't?
I have been on this diet since July 18th. It is tough.
Barb

I have celiac disease too, and am JUST starting the diet today. I am eating Enviro-kids Frosted Flakes right now, which are gluten free and taste pretty good. If you go into the Organic section of the grocery store, there are lots of products that say "gluten free" on the label. Good luck

Personally I eat the kellogs cereals from time to time and have not suffered from any ill effect, the malt extract is such a tiny quantity. Corn flakes, rice crispies have both been fine .. even the odd bowl of crunchy nut..as for puffed rice and the ogran gf porridge flakes...yeuck :o

I too was very frustrated about Kelloggs adding wheat to their Corn Pops--I discovered it after eating the changed version for a few months! (obviously it didn't affect the taste if I hadn't realized it until I read the box again!) I have contacted them to complain--we all need to speak up!
I've discovered some pretty good gluten-free less-popular brands cereals:
Whole Foods Market 365 brand makes Honey Frosted Flakes which taste just like Kelloggs Frosted Flakes! Also, Health Valley makes Rice Crunch-Ems and Corn Crunch-Ems which are very similar to and almost as good as Rice Chex and Corn Chex.
My children, who are also celiacs, like Puffins (only the honey rice variety is gluten-free) and Panda Puffs (peanut butter variety is gluten-free).
I believe Post Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles are gluten-free too

I was diagnosed with celiac disease almost 4 years ago. No, the diet is no fun, except that I have found that I can eat most of the mexican food I like. I try to stay away from most cereals, although I love rice crispie treats. After all these years I still have a very sensitive stomach. Rice crispies don't seem to bother me. A friend of mine made me some "snowman poop", (cocoa puffs with peanut butter and powdered sugar) it looks great but I am afraid to try it. I can't bear the thought of spending Christmas week in the bathroom! I have found that Hodgson Mills fine milled rice flour is an excellent alternative to bake with. I make a killer cornbread. I have found this flour and others at Albertsons in the "health food" isle.
I have also found that hot and spicy pork skins crushed up make an excellent coating for chicken(YUM

Here's what Kelloggs in the UK have to say about products which are suitable for coeliacs...
http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/results.asp
Seems like cornflakes and crunchy nut cornflakes are both on the list according to them, which is great news for us

In regards to what Laura posted, the Whole Foods Brand 365 Frosted Flakes are excellent - they taste just like the real thing - and they're inexpensive, unlike most gluten free food. I also like Nature's Path Sweet Corn Flakes, which are good. Nature's Path also makes a bunch of other "Envirokids" cereals which are OK. I'll have to check, but I believe that Kinikinnick is the brand....they make very good donuts and decent bagels - definitely worth a look.

Corn, corn syrup and any other name that contains corn causes me lots of problems....I suggest cutting out any thing containing corn......this has improved my health from poor and failing to 100\%. I also cut out wheat, gluten, sugar, grains and dairy. I have been symptom free for 3 years from endometriosis, acne, gas and bloating, sleepless nights, red eyes, sneezing and clearing my throat....I should add that my granddaughter only eats meat and veggies, fruit and rice....she only drinks water since she has been weaned from her mother. My daughter kept the same diet while nursing....our little one, now 16 months has not had a sick day since birth. She never had the throw ups, a cold, earache, or any other ill day. She wont eat processed foods as she had never had any of the above mentioned things in her diet and does not care for the taste....She is happy and healthy. This type of eating also relieved me from depression and angry moods swings. I recently visited family I hadnt seen in over 6 years.....I was told more than once that I look younger now. I have not had plastic surgery. When I eat bad foods........my face does look drawn and not relaxed. I love how I feel now and will not return to eating the old way.....I have done this for 3 years, and I have not even had a cold in that time.

I have been a celiac for 11 years now, I live in Mexico, so I have many corn products to enjoy. I have been eating corn flakes (Kelog's) from time to time and I use it to coat meat and chicken and I seem to tollerate it well.

There has been a recent trend by breakfast cereal manufacturers to increase the amount of malt extract or barley in corn cereals.
Those that are still gluten-free now state that on the packet. If a breakfast cereal doesn't claim to be gluten-free then you have to assume now that it is not.
I now cook myself a bowl of rice with sultanas and nuts for breakfast each day. It takes a little more planning - it is cooking while I am getting myself organised for the day - but it also costs a lot less. If you use brown rice then it is a lot more healthy, and you don't need to add salt and sugar unless you want it.

I got diagnosed almost 8 years ago and have been eating GF ever since. In the beginning it was so hard because there wasn't a lot of education about such a common allergy. Cereals have always been one of the toughest things because I used to LOVE them soooo much. GF cereals are not that tasty and I get pretty tired of corn and rice all the ****ing time. However I am wondering since I can't seem to find any information on it if MALT FLAVORING has gluten in it. This is what is used in Kellog's Corn Flakes now; replacing MALT EXTRACT which I know had gluten. Anyone know?

Most brands of cornflakes and other cereals with malt flavouring have added malted barley to their products. This contains MORE gluten than they used to.

It is very difficult to find manufactured cereals that are not at risk from cross contamination in the production or packaging equipment.
I cook myself rice and sultanas for breakfast. or rice and dates.

Raw unprocessed meat is gluten-free. But most sausages are not. Beefburgers may not be gluten-free and in some countries the only minced beef on sale has added cereal so is not gluten-free.
Breaded ham and any stuffed meat should also be avoided, as with coated chicken joints etc.
The book, gluten-free cookery by Peter Thomson can be ordered from any bookshop, or amazon, but you can also try all the recipes on-line -see the link to gluten-free cookery at the top of this page.

No one has really answered the question: Is Tostitos Corn Chips and Pace Salsa gluten free.
I just got diagnosed with CD in November. I was told before that I had Diverticulitis for the past 20 years. I've had a pain in my left side for 20 years that I just assumed was caused by Diverticulitis. Now I've tried to stay away from Gluten foods, so I'm looking to you people for help.

Natural Tostitos are gluten-free
Restaurant style are gluten-free
Bite size rounds are gluten-free
Crispy rounds are gluten-free
(Information from http://www.tostitos.com 3 Jan 2007)
Multigrain are not
Tostitos dips and salsa contain modified food starch and may not be gluten-free
Pace Salsa - none of them list any starch or gluten in the ingredients, so they should be gluten-free.
Always check the ingredients list as these can change.

Puffins is gluten free and comes in honey or peanut butter flavor. I get it at Trader Joes or Whole Foods and some grocery stores carry it as well. I think it is made by "Barbaras". Trader Joes is usually cheaper than Whole Foods. Also, I have found some great gluten free waffles at both places that I toast up and spread with Frienships whipped cottage cheese...yummy. Use agave sweetener if you want it sweet.

No, don't try Corn Pops. The only cereals that are really gluten-free are puffed rice and puffed corn, and those that specify gluten-free on the label. The problem with most cereals is malt syrup, the commonest sweetener. Wheat, oats, rye, and barley are glutinous grains; malt is made from barley.
Your other major culprit will be "food starch" or "starch". That's always wheat starch, unless potato, corn, or tapioca are specified.
Also avoid soy sauce (unless specifically made without wheat) and balsamic vinegar. I don't know why balsamic vinegar is a problem; I just know it is.
Good luck.

My first question - how were your allergies diagnosed?
If your son has been diagnosed as Coeliac by a hospital, then the most likely diagnosis for yourself is also that you are Coeliac and should not be eating any gluten at all.
I would look at the threads about what you can eat,
and follow them exactly and see if your health improves.

I would like to know the date that Kellogg's changed their "recipe" for Corn Pops and started adding wheat. I just happened to review the food label at the store today as a matter of routine. When I read "wheat startch" I nearly had a meltdown in the cereal aisle. I loved Corn Pops. I can't tell you how disappointed I am....and I will let Kelloggs know it

Question: Does High Fructose Corn Syrup contain Gluten?? A: Why would it?
I know my high school English teacher would have a cow if she heard me answer a question with a question - but, as a life coach, I do it a lot. I first stumbled on this issue while studying to be a chef. One of the best texts I have on the fine art of nourishment is "On Food and Cooking" by Harold McGee. A gluten intolerant myself, I was appalled to hear that HFCS is "sometimes" fermented with BARLEY! Oh NO! HFCS is in EVERYTHING - now what do I do? Confused, I shot this question to Mr. McGee: Good Morning Mr. McGee - I was intrigued to learn that high fructose corn syrup is sometimes made from barley malt enzymes. That prompted me to ponder if this would pose a risk for those highly sensitive to gluten? Are sufferers of Celiac disease at risk of developing a reaction to HFCS manufactured with malt enzymes or are the gluten proteins absent from the process?
His Response:
Hi Russ, I don't know for sure, but I imagine that the malt enzymes are added in very small quantities to cornstarch solutions, and any gluten proteins would be minor contaminants in a very minor component of the process. In addition, gluten isn't water soluble, so if present at all they would be very minor contaminants. Regards, Harold
Although - for other reasons - I am NOT a fan of HFCS - I am putting it on my "DON'T PANIC" list for now. Good Luck my friend - eat well and stay healthy!

As of Dec '08 PACE SALSA IS OUT!!! It is no longer GF. That's the biggest bummer of my entire week. I have a big old bottle that I can't use sitting in my pantry. I'm DEFINATELY complaining
