Moderated discussion and help for gluten free, coeliac, celiac, wheat allergies or intolerance

actioning query
 Drinks  Posted by
Hi....I think I may have a gluten intolerance. I recently had a major operation, and since have had several pain attacks, the most recent taking me a long time to recover from, as all the tests for "serious" problems showed I was OK.

I have started a gluten free diet, and have noticed considerable improvement. However, I love beer and was disappointed to find that its not gluten free. What about wine and other beverages>? Please could you provide some advice?

Best Regards,

Richard

HTML>Beer, Lager, cloudy lemonade, barley drinks contain some gluten.

Wine, clear lemonade, and all spirits are gluten free.

I was diagnosed with GT about 13 years ago. I am surprised that spirits (I presume you mean wiskey, scotch, cordials) are considered gluten free. I generally stick to wine if I wish as alcoholic drink.

 Re: Drinks  Posted by
Unfortunately, I have found with a blood test that I now need to leave out yeast containing drinks, so I guess the original question was academic. As far as I know, the only alcohol I can drink now is Spirits, as they are distilled.

Cheers, (!!)

Richard

I recently been diagnosed with yeast gluten and wheat allergies and are avoiding them. I got told vodka and gin (white spirits) are ok to drink. is that right?

Re white spirits  Posted by Peter
Yes, since these are double distilled you shouldn't have a problem.

I've no personal problem but as a barman i'm having to deal with stigma to do with gluten in certain products, eg Makers Mark Bourbon and Absolut and Ketel One vodkas amongst others as they are distilled from wheat. I don't believe that complex protein structures could make it through the distillation process but would like some one to give me the last word on the subject as regards spirits, beer in general and wheat beers especially also wines, soft drinks etc as regards ingredients in cocktails etc if i'm sourcing unusual ingredients i want to be sure i know what effect the drinks might have

Hi

Are there any softdrinks that are gluten free? For instance diet coke?

 Re Drinks  Posted by Peter
The drinks to beware of are those containing barley, such as barley water and some cloudy lemonades. Avoid any flavoured with malt extract.

Fruit juices should be gluten-free

 Re Drinks  Posted by Peter
Most cordials should be gluten-free.
Check that the liquid looks clear, and check the ingredients list.

For example I am drinking bottlegreen elderflower cordial. This contains sugar, spring water, elderflowers, citric acid, preservative sulphur dioxide.

This is completely gluten-free.

Beware any cordial that includes barley or starch or modified starch in the ingredients list. They would not be gluten-free.

 Re Drinks  Posted by Peter
Beware of ginger beer. Some brands contain gluten as modified starch to give them a cloudy appearance.

What is Cointreau based on(grape-brandy etc)? I find it hard to get this info anywhere. Contrary to what some people say, many coeliacs react to alcohols based on gluten containing grains. At the moment I stick to Dom Benedictine,Grand Marnier, brandy, rum,Kahlua as far as spirits go.

To answer all of your questions about gluten-free beverages, a new website has been established

www.glutenfreedrinks.com
www.glutenfreedrinks.net

All information is supported by cross-referenced documentation from the manufacturers. Some of it may surprise you. Having raised a celiac child (now 27), I am very aware of the damage and confusion that anecdotal information can do to celiacs, especially the newly diagnosed. There always seems to be someone ready to swear that this, or that product affects them, despite absence of objective evidence. Remember when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail! In other words, humans are heir to many ills. Just because you are celiac does not mean that every stomach rumble results from gluten exposure.

Live well, gluten free!

you say all spirits are gluten free; i have been told whiskey is not as it is made from malt

 Re: Drinks  Posted by Peter
It is very unlikely that any protein would survive the process of double distillation in making a spirit. However it is up to you to make the decision about the information that you have and how you will use it. If you think that there still remains a risk, then go for spirits made from potato starch, or from grape wines, or simply avoid alcoholic drinks altogether.

Is campari and soda ok to drink on a gluten free diet?

Post a reply to this message, or post a new topic

 Re: Drinks  Posted by Peter
Campari is made from a spirit blended with a range of herbs and spices, but should not contain any starch, so it is gluten-free.

is coca cola or diet coke gluten free

Post a reply to this message, or post a new topic

 Re: Drinks  Posted by Peter
There does seem to be some debate as to whether various cola drinks contain no gluten, or traces of gluten. This may also vary with the brand and country of origin.
I cannot therefore confirm that cola or coke drinks are gluten free.

If you are in the UK then Coca Cola products are gluten free. This may vary from country to country. If you are in the UK read the last FAQ here which says all brand drinks are gluten free: http://www.coca-cola.co.uk/faq

When I was diagnosed over twenty years ago the advise was to avoid real ales but standard beers were OK. I have continued drinking bitter without any ill effects. However if I accidently consume something containing gluten I am violently ill.

When I have queried this before I was advised that by the time the beer had completed the brewing process, particularly with modern mass produced beers, no gluten would be present. Over the years I have become used to my gluten free diet and accept it without a problem but I couldn't imagine not being able to drink bitter.

Are there any other coliacs out there that are happily drinking beer?
