Facial rash
Posted by
I have been a coeliac for about 7 years going through the usual digestive problems and symptoms. I am suddenly developed a facial rash of which some spots erupt into blisters or pussy spots. I need to know if it could be a side effect of the ceoliacs disease. Has anyone come across this before, or do I need to look at alternative allergies - argh. I have had this rash for about 3 months

Ann, I have read on several internet pieces that there is a rash associated with this disease. Try researching it on the web...wish I could remember the name of it, but at the moment I am having an early "senior" moment. It is out there on the web, though.

Ann, I found some information on "Dermatitis Herptiformis." This is a skin rash associated with celiac disease. You might try the web page:

Hope this helps.

i have had this rash for 2 weeks. It is on the chin area, mostly on one side. It is starting to spread. I have tried a few home treatments and using vasaline and i camt to believe that that was aiding it. It looks like very tiny blisters, but they are not. sometoimes itchy and maybe a little scally. Anyone out there have a suggestion other than seeing a dermatologist. eileen

If the rash is from exposure to gluten, then 7 days is not long enough for it to subside.
It should decline slowly over a period of several weeks, and eventually disappear altogether.
In some cases the rash may take longer to subside in spite of following a completely gluten-free diet.
I am afraid that only your doctor can recommend suitable treatments to alleviate the discomfort.

I have been using Eurax cream for my blisters I bought It over the counter at my chemist,It took a week to see a difference and I only have to apply It every few days now to keep the blisters at bay.Only use a tiny ammount otherwise your skin will peel.

I developed a horrible facial rash that started in the corners of my nostrils and then spread down to the corners of my mouth. It started about 2 months into my senior year of college. I was taking 26 credits, hard classes; I was SUPER stressed (not really thinking I was that stressed). At first, I was diagnosed with impetigo, then severe acne, then it became rosacia....I stopped asking the "doctors" at our university clinic because every time it was something new and nobody was right. After I graduated, I went home to my family doctor and was told with in minutes that it was simply a rash caused by stress and then my doctor told me about celiac disease. Since I am more that 50\% Norwegian, I am at a High risk of having celiac disease. It seems my stressful senior year of college caused my body to respond with a rash and a host of other physical ailments I never really considered....(adnominal cramping, super soft stool, depression, the face rash, ect). Going gluten free and cutting the stress out of my life was the answer. My rash went away 2 months after graduating and hasn't in 6 years. I’m lucky not to have any scaring since I was given copious amounts of various drugs to cure the "various diagnoses". My point Please be careful and objective when considering a ‘doctor’s’ diagnosis of your face rash.

We have a history of coeliac in the family. Recently several of us (mother, sister, myself) have also had a diagnosis of fructose malabsorbtion (often goes hand in hand with coeliac, like lactose intolerance).
(One place to get a good overview of Fructose malabsorbtion is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fructose_malabsorption)
Anyway, recently my 5 year old has developed a rash on his cheeks (small red and tiny pussy spots) as well as bad flatualence. Looking over his diet I have been adding apples to his lunchbox lately which is one of the fructose problem foods. As of this morning I have started him on the fructose malabsorbtion diet too. Hopefully this will make a difference.
Maybe it would be worth investigating this if anyone else has problems. Once you are on the coeliac diet, it isn't such a big leap to include the fructose malabsorption diet (for me it mostly meant also cutting out onions and apples). Good luck.

what about other kinds of rashes? I have a rash on my upper arms that is itchy and is very fine, red and bumpy. It doesn't appear to be the classis celiac rash, but I am just waiting to be diagnosed with the family curse and this may be the beginning. or the end, depending on your point of view!

I have had the rash that seems to be the main topic of conversation re facial rash.
Being a Celiac i went to my GP and asked if it might be related. he said no it could not be. this went on for several visits until i decided to go to a hospital. Whilst waiting i spoke to a junior Doctor about the weather and he asked if i had come to the hospital about my facial rash because he thought he recognised the spots as Dermatitis Herptiformis. sure enough i was diagnosed and he was right.
I now take 150ml of dapsone a day and the only time i ever get the rash is if i forget to take my tablets.
hope this helps someone if it does please let me know.
joe

I have been in the same boat being a coeliac and with a rash on my shoulders, upper chest and chin area - they can sting too. I have been through treatments for rosacea, acne, tea tree balm and they all burnt my skin, made it worse actually. My doctor has just put me on dapsone too, but 100mg perday. I have only been on the tablets for a week and nothing has really changed - I wonder how long it will take? Im interested that Joe above take 150mg - my doctor said I need to monitor the dosage myself, but down when the rash gets better. I also have adenomyosis of the uterus, but having a hysterectomy next month - I wonder if that is connected, the rash could be a result of the toxicity in my system. Hopefully it will help anyway.

I think the nostril to chin rash is perioral dermatitis which I have read can be associated with malabsorbtion - which can be ceoliac disease. I have the rash. If I eat gluten it comes back. If I don't it slowly clears up. Dont put a cortisone cream on it. It will make it worse. Vinegar helped but I smelt like a fish & chip shop.

I was sent to two dermotologists and a rheumatologist, finally I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease by my Primary doctor after 6 months, I have been on Minocyclene for my face rash and on the Gluten Free Diet for one month and I have only seen results if I stay on the minocyclene anitbiotic. It irritated my stomach at first but now that I take Nexium and zantac together it's much better. If there is anything else I could do other than an antibotic please let me know, I really don't like taking so much medication.

hello, ive just had the test for my rash the doc was thinking it was Dermatitis Herptiformis. mine is on my hands face and chest and she said that even thought its brought on by eating wheat its not dermatitis herptiformis because its in the wrong places on my body.
I dont know if thats any help.
I must admit other than the constant itching it was the rash on my face that prompted me to go to the docs. however even though I have been diagnosed with a wheat allergy they are hoping as they have caught it early, it will not progress but only time will tell

Dermaid is the products name if you live in australia or any .05 cortisone cream.Once you have been gluten feee for several weeks it should clear without the cream this worked for me but you should see a doctor or dematoligist self diagnosis and associating everything with your celiac disease may mean you wont get the treatment you need

Hi there,
It seems like I might be experiencing the same thing as you did. How long did your rash take to clear up after you went gluten free?

I was diagnoses with celiac disase about 5 years ago, i had this really bad rash on my nose and under both of my eyes across my checks its commonly known as the "butterfly" rash. I had it so bad it looked like i had second or third degree burns on my face, it was very itchy and painful. i was in and out of the doctor and no one could tell me what it was... i used so many different prescription cream and nothing seemes to work. fianlly my doctor suggested washing my face with selsum blue ( dandruff shampoo) i did this every morning for a week and it work! I have never had it again as bad as that time but once in a while i will get it. And it seems to be when i am under alot of stress
