The following article makes rather grim reading. It gives a lot of references.

It is also worth following the link to discussion at the foot of the page.

Hi I've had AS for about 20 years. I've had many flareups in that time but bascially I fight the disease with lots of movement and exercise on the good days & NSAIDS to help me sleep at night. I've recently heard of the Non Starch approach and am flabergatsed to see just how much of my diet actually is starch based (too much!). I'm now trying to find a list of all starchy foods. I've found the basics such as wheat, pasta, rice but I'm sure there is starch hidden in many many others. Is there a list or a counter (sauch as a calorie counter) available?? I'm considering getting the IBS Strach free diet book, but wonder if the UK based book will be relevant to Australian availablitlity and products??
Any info welcomed.
Rosa

Chickpeas are one of those difficult foods that come right in the middle.
They have about 23 \% protein and 47\% starch.
I would make a meal of chickpeas with vegetables, but wouldn't add other starch or protein to the meal.
Chickpeas are a rich source of dietary fiber, and they digest slowly.

Peter, I am about 44 lbs overweight and need to lose the ghastly stuff! That is why I want to try food combining. I am also sick of the other diets and none of them are me-friendly! This looks good.

Peter, why do we have asterisks in front of milk and cream in Oils and Fat: Is this the "moderation only" foods?
Thanks

The asterisks were for good sources of calcium.
There was a caption in the book, but it has become separated on the web.

I have just stumbled across this diet. Was following the New Beverly Hills Diet and since following the modified version of it, have not had any heartburn or the like. But I cannot see myself eating fruit only for a day! Now I am lookin for alternative food combining diets, as it makes me feel on a permanent high. It is fun combining and makes you feel in control.

I agree with you Emily.. Right at this moment, I have a mouth so sore, it hurts all over. I followed a diet where I had to finish at least ONE pineapple in my morning eating. I almost cried eating the last slice. No more! Others thrive on it on the same diet. We all are so unique and different.

fresh pineapple contains very powerful protein digesting enzymes.
They are digesting (destroying) the lining of your mouth and oesophagus.
This quantity of pineapple is definitely not healthy!

Hi again Peter,
Mmm, you are a fast one! In my quest to find a diet I could stick to, Weighless approved Cadbury Hot Chocolate Lite. Ingredients: Skim Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Cocoa Powder, Salt, Magnesium Carbonate, Thickener, Aspartame (oops), Acesulfame K, *Contains Penylalanine
per serving: Energy 207kj Protein 3.1g Carbs 9g, Fats 0.3g Fibre 1.51g
Should I steer clear of this bedtime drink, which I normally drink with about 20ml cream?
I will do whatever you tell me to lose the weight.
Thanks
Louise South Africa

Weight loss, and maintaining an optimum weight depend on keeping to a healthy balanced diet you can stick to, and getting enough exercise to balance what you eat.
Very few people ever achieve permanent weight loss on crash diets or temporary diets.
The core of a healthy diet is fresh fruit and vegetables, with a little fat (olive oil is best), a little fish and a little meat or cheese.
Anything else, such as cake, pastry, pizza, pies, alcohol of any sort, and drinks such as your hot chocolate will add weight. If you are really determined to lose weight, cut these out of your diet.

| A diet for weight loss
| Posted by Peter
|
A recent study at the Children's Hospital, Boston, may explain why some people lose weight on a particular diet and others do not.
They put overweight young adults on either a low fat, or a low sugar (low-glycaemic load (L-GL)) diet.
The L-GL diet limits the intake of foods that raise blood sugar levels quickly such as white bread, and refined breakfast cereals, potato, carrots.
Those people who naturally produce high levels of insulin lost more weight on the L-GL diet, losing an average of 5.8 kilograms over 18 months compared to just 1.2 kg for people on the low-fat diet. They also lost significantly more of their body fat.
So if you are following this diet in order to lose weight, it is worth trying to keep to a low-glycaemic load to see if you benefit from this.
Base your main meals on protein plus fruit and vegetables. (no added sugar)
If you have a starchy meal make sure that it is low glycaemic load such as brown rice, millet, whole grain wheat, with no refined flour, no refined breakfast cereals, no potato or carrots or parsnips.

| Re: Special needs Cerebral Palsy

Hi ,
I have a three year old son with cerebral palsy and I recently changed hid diet over to food combining to because he had a lot of digestive problems and suffered from terrible reflux. The diet has worked miracles with his reflux, and he looks happy and healthy, but I just cannot get him to put on any weight, since starting the diet. Children with Cerebral Palsy have problems putting weight on anyway, any have extremely high energy requirements, but there is only so much you can get a three year old to eat. He also cannot tolerate a lot of foods which would be good for him, even if they are properly combined, like avocados, goats milk, cheese, bananas and most fruit. Also, all of his food has to be blended like a baby's. I really don't want to stop his food combining diet because it has helped him so much with his digestion. He has gone from being sick about ten times per day, to being sick about once a week. Big difference! Do you have any ideas on how I could tackle his diet, and get more calories into him?

Hi i have a friend who is starch free she camer over for dinner that i cooked just for her the other night and this is an EASY way to tell if the food you are eating contains starch.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Iodine !!!!!!!!
Take food to be tested and put aside into a small plate. Drop a drop of Iodine on the food and presto!!! If the food turns black it contains starch! Try a potatoe to see exactly what your looking for and then try it with everytihing in the kitchen.

Where do avacados fit into the food combining concept? What can they be combined with?
Thanks again !

Avocados contain about 2\% protein and 15\% fat. They contain almost no starch. Less than 1\% sugar.
The protein level is not significantly high, so you can eat them with any meal, either a protein meal or a starch meal.
They are a good source of many minerals.

my husband has been suffering severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea for years now. every time we go to the drs they are amazed and cant seem to diagnose his problem. his reaction to certain foods occurs 12-24 hours and often lasts half a day. he is constantly on the toilet and it is really beginning to affect his mood and worklife.a new symptom is eczema on the inside of his legs.the foods he has reactions to that we have identified are potatoes, rice and pasta, also gravy and fizzy drinks.if i boil the starch out of the poatoes and rice he is ok, but if this doesnt happen and he eats these foods prepared another way eg roasted or steamed he will be sick. please suggest ways we can avoid these problems.
thankyou
