4 month old baby
  Mumoftwoboys on 2012-05-21
Hi, if I were you I would cut out gluten from your diet. I did when my baby was 7 months old and after months of what was diagnosed as reflux, he's hardly sick or in pain at all now. I wish I'd done more research when he was a couple of months old! He's now almost 1 and we are both still happily following a gluten free diet. I know in order to diagnose coeliacs, the subject has to be on a full gluten diet for six weeks before drs can run the blood tests. If that comes back positive a referral is made for a camera into the gut to assess the state of it and whatever damage there is

Re:A coeliac diet is really healthier than a normal diet
  Twila on 2012-05-07
My 6 year old daughter spent most of her life with tummy aches that were unexplained. A few people suggested that I remove gluten from her diet and it has really made a difference. Unfortunately not everything on the market warns of possible gluten containing products. I learned this when calling general mills to find out if kix contained gluten. The lady told me that items such as malt and flavors are not required to be listed. She also warned that oats unless exclusively stating that they are gluten free have a high rate of cross contamination. if you do not have other allergies to foods such as eggs or dairy it is not too terribly hard to learn to bake your own bread. I took my favorite brownie and banana recipes and tweaked them to make a rather tasty loaf of bread. The biggest catch is making the loves SMALL so that the middle gets cooked. For larger loaves I cook for 30 minutes uncovered and then cover with foil for an additional 20 min. The recipe I developed is as follows:

IT IS IMPORTANT TO FIRST MIX ET AND DRY INGREDIENTS SEPARATELY AND THOROUGHLY >>> I RECOMMEND SIFTING THE DRY INGREDIENTS

1 cup rice flour

1/2 cup your choice (soy, sorghum, quinoa, mesquite, teff ) flour

1/2 cup amaranth flour

1/2 cup flax seed (ground)

1/2 tablespoon xanth or guar gum

1 tablespoon starch (corn, arrowroot, tapioca)

1 teaspoon salt

4 eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup (melted and cooled butter or vegetable oil)

1/2 cup syrup ( I use either corn syrup or a molasses corn syrup blend)

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and blend well

Let sit while warming the oven to 350 and lightly spraying loaf pans with oil

Gently roll the mix into prepared pan(s)... I use my spatula to gently shape the dough like you would a meatloaf.

This recipe is easily adjusted... Soy flour will darken quicker than other flours and I often replace it with sorghum, tapioca or arrowroot and omit the additional starch.

I hope this helps. Most deserts like brownies and cookies are easy to sub gluten free flours for reg flour. Just remember to add about 1/2 tablespoon xanth or guar gum to the flour mixture for every 2 cups of gluten free flour. Sorghum is my favorite substitute and I almost always use 1/2 - 1 cup rice flour in my mixes.

if using mini loaf pans cooking will take less time

I just read your post (I do not even know how long ago you posted) but I am curious to know if you found answers to your questions as my situation seems very similar? I am just starting to try to figure out what has been going on. I recently tried a gluten-free diet (mostly - I'm not being 100\% strict in terms of food that may have trace amounts of gluten). I also recently realized that my small finger joint is swollen and an internet search pointed to grout. I am looking for a doctor like you said, who can look at a variety of symptoms and figure out both possible causes and relationships between various issues. I have no idea what type of doctor to even look for?! Any advice would be appreciated

 Gluten-free Dairy-free and Soya-free recipes
  on 2012-03-29
Gluten free plus soy free plus dairy free is not uncommon. Corn free as well is unusual. Sugar in the diet cannot be avoided - and there are several different sorts of sugar - but you can avoid adding extra sugar.

So the first question I would ask is what is the basis of the diagnosis?

You can bake with eggs, rice flour, sorghum, gram, potato, sticky rice flour, tapioca flour, chestnut flour, sago flour, various oils - I use olive oil for baking. You could use lard.
Other useful ingredients: ground almonds, cocoa powder ( not chocolate) , coconut flour / cream.

I tend to eat very little baked food. breakfast is freshly cooked rice with fruit. Lunch rice or baked potato with vegetables, supper - main meal, meat or fish, potato, variety of vegetables.

Hope that is useful

Peter

I see that you have posted a lot of info so I wondered if you might be able to help me too. I'm supposed to be gluten free, corn free, soy free, dairy free, sugar and all sweeteners except stevia free, peanut free, yeast free, and more. I'm currently trying to make or find recipes to bake such as breads, cakes, cookies, etc. that will fit into these restrictions. Is there any chance you can lead me to some help.

Secondly, In the 2nd photo I see a cube like block captured by lifting chains and suspended off the ground maybe 6" or so. The lifting chains are noted to be tight while bearing the load. But, the block is captured in only two of three axis. So, my question is unless this block is precisely balanced on the chain, why doesn't the block tilt forward (towards Ed's toes) or backward immediately?

No hand chain, but no power cable either.

Can those tree trunks even support that much load

This is why religious people are stupid, and why religious belief is ridiculous.

They try to suggest that magic is real.

Magic is just the word given to a technology one does not yet understand.

Religious texts are either entirely fictional, or they are describing encounters with extraterrestrials and their technology.

Things are either mass, or energy, if they are neither, they don't exist.

God does not exist in the sense that silly religious people think.

Gods are either entirely fictional, or extraterrestrials.

There is no 3rd possibility. There is no such thing as magic.

On the subject of Coral Castle, I admit it's an embarrassment for people to try and suggest Ed used "anti-gravity" or had help from Aliens. Some people just don't use their brains before talking.

I too have found that I have flare-ups in my stomach when I've eaten something with barley malt syrup in it: pale ale, and Nairn's oat biscuits both cause this. Barley does contain gluten, but you may be right that the barley malt is not pure, and it contains wheat aswell. Note: when barley and oats are grown wheat grains can get mixed up with the crop of course, so no grain is pure unless grown in specially protected way

 Re: rash on my face
  CRB on 2012-02-12
For your case (inhalers) it is more than likely caused by your inhalers. They are more than likely a steroid type inhalant.... steroid cream, inhalants, etc are known to cause what is called perioral dermatitis which is a rash on skin around your mouth and can be around your eyes too called periorificial dermatits. It is unknown why it causes this. Anyone that has used hydrocortisone on your face (or anywhere and touched your face without washing hands it can cause this perioral dermatitis. From what I've researched it is very hard to heal and it can reoccur later on after all symptoms are gone. I've noticed with my son (who has never been exposed to any type of steroid creams or inhalants but has an awful chin rash like this and around his nose and getting at his eyes too) that drs (at least his) are prescribing steroid creams for the face which are not supposed to be put on the face! It must not be very well known about and I am alsO getting very frustrated about nobody knowing what this is! Hope this helps! May try putting some type of skin barrier on face befOre using inhaler

Again, check each flavour. I have just been diagnosed as allergic to wheat and thus gluten, and I was/am addicted to salt and vinegar crisps. All varieties seem to include gluten, even Tyrrells and Kettle Chips. I conclude it must be to do with the vinegar being "malt". I am very disappointed! Have you had your thyroid tested? You could have problems with it and its worth looking into. The problem with the Cambridge and similar diets is that its low calorie and so far removed from normal food that you will put the weight back on when you come off the diet. A healthy eating plan would be much better with a reasonable number of calories. The Atkins diet might be worth looking at or even better the Paleo diet as it is based on food like meat, fish, veg and fruit that are naturally gluten free. The fats in it are beneficial to thyroid function if they are healthy fats

Chex makes a number of GF cereals if you don't want to buy the expensive GF ones.

Most Natural corn chips are safe, read the ingredients. Stay away from hydrogenated oils...must be pure canola or olive oils.

Salsa is safe w/o corn syrup. I do not eat any corn syrup, High fructose or not. Many are processed with wheat or malt for stability.

Do not buy processed meats. Even chicken in a brine is not safe, the brine may contain stock which has flour. Buy fresh, read the package. There are GF hams, bacon, salami, etc.

Read, read, read the labels. Products change ingredients all the time, so don't assume if it was one safe, it still is.

Some cheese like blue cheese contains wheat.

Unfortunately not all foods labeled GF are safe, some manufactures, mis- label food. Be sure to know what you are buying.

Good luck, happy and healthy eating

CONCLUSIONS: Although coeliac disease may only account for a small proportion of diarrhoeal mortality, these deaths are not preventable by applying normal diarrhoea treatment guidelines, which may even involve gluten-based food supplements. As other causes of diarrhoeal mortality decline, coeliac disease will become a proportionately increasing problem unless consideration is given to trying gluten-free diets for children with chronic diarrhoea and malnutrition."

I have read all the e_mails sent in.I am not surprised by all the confusion about food. This is the advise i was given years ago, and it works. Only eat what nature put on the earth for us. If it processed in anyway leave it alone. What sugar and white flour are bleach and processed. They should be left alone. Combining food will clear up most disorders

 Sorbitol
  Peter on 2011-08-01
Sorbitol can cause intestinal discomfort in children and sometimes in adults.

In children it can be from drinking too much fruit juice.

Sorbitol is an indigestible sugar.

Sorbitol is found in a lot of manufactured foods, and in some fruit juice and some fruit.

Prune juice and prunes have the highest amount, with less in pears, sweet cherry, peach and apple.

Strawberry, raspeberry, pineapple and citrus fruit such as oranges are free of sorbitol

Regarding the ancient sand script writings, as with most ancient artifacts the real translation has been lost to the ages, however folk lore and folk songs handed down through generations give clues to the actual events that took place. If we are to believe that events that took place over three thousand have been kept true to form in song, then we are kidding ourselves, clues are abundant of what actually took place, but we must be vigil in understanding that they may be tainted by the interpreters that applied the accepted logic of the time, our technology today does not represent the future path, but instead mirrors the past

Re: Gluten Intolerance and Ulcerative Colitis

I don't think that there is any doubt that some cases of ulcerative colitis are caused by gluten or wheat in the diet.
But it is not the only cause.
People who react to gluten or wheat also seem to have a higher rate of adverse reactions to other foods as well.
So ulcerative colitis might be cause by other foods you are eating even though you are on a gluten-free diet.
Try and eat as varied a diet as possible, keep processed foods to the minimum, keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms, and you might be able to spot a connection

The understanding that i have, both personally n from reading, which i believe to be true, is that most glucose contains wheat, some corn but more commonly wheat. Brewers Yeast is not gluten-free. It contains gluten from the way it is grown.

Yeast grown on cane sure, or beet sugar or fruit sugars will be gluten-free.

If the package does not say gluten-free you must assume it contains gluten

 anomalies record in the ice
  Peter on 2011-07-18
Geologists have discovered a vast new landscape that rose above the north Atlantic waves 56 million years ago.

Discovered by UK researchers, the river-valley system is off the north west of Scotland, about 200km west of the Shetland Islands.

The results are published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Over a six-month period the researchers reflected sound waves off the seabed to discover the new landscape.

They surveyed about 10,000 sq km of seabed; the sound waves reaching depths of up to several kilometres.

"It is supposed to be just boring layers of mud and sand down there," said Nicky White from the University of Cambridge, UK who was involved in the project.

"What we found was a big surprise: three-dimensional surfaces of hills and valleys," he told BBC News.

The lead author Ross Hartley, from the University of Cambridge, UK, plotted out the surfaces and discovered clear evidence of the drainage pattern of a river system, going down to what looked like a coastline.

It looked just like the surface of land, except that it was under a thousand metres of ocean, and a further 2000m of accumulated sediment.

Chipping away
The team managed to obtain drill samples; not complete cores that might contain macroscopic fossils, just chips from commercial drilling. But that was enough to prove that this had once been land.

In the sediments above and below there were the microscopic remains of plankton such as foraminifera. But at the suspected land surface they found pollen from terrestrial plants and lignite from rotted vegetation.

"This hidden landscape was above the waves between about 56 and 55 million years ago," said Dr White.

"It must have risen about a kilometre within 2 million years and then subsided just as quickly. That is extraordinary," he added.

Food lists and ingredients starch food list
  Jacques Plante on 2011-07-15
Food starches are essential to maintain a balanced blood sugar which has a direct involvement with mental health. Playing with radical fad diets can be just plain dangerous.

I'm currently reading a book called "Nutrition and Your Mind"

by George Watson. I also recommend "The Nutrition Solution - A guide to your Metabolic Type".

I'm sure these two books will help you tremendously and provide you with the information you need to streamline your diet to benefit yourself.

Ps

We can't all be like Arnold as we do differ widly genetically but keep working out for sure.

I have conducted a search of UK supermarkets including Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsburys and Asda, and all their spirit vinegars are flavoured with Malt Extract, and therefore do not seem to be suitable for highly sensitivs coeliacs. Perhapr the process of distilation of Distilled Malt vinager may eliminate the gluten, but I have not tested this.

Re E4 between Sougia and Agia Roumeli

Your best preparation is to look at some of the gorges you have already walked in google earth. Look in 3D mode. See how what you know to be quite rugged terrain appears fairly smoothed out.

Now look at the coast towards Domata beach. In spite of the smoothing out that is rugged!! Most of the places I have walked in Crete I can easily spot the path on the ground from space, but the path to Domata beach is mostly invisible.
You have huge cliffs, overhangs, scree slopes.

You can see the overall pattern of ascents and descents

Carry 2 litres of water per person. Make sure that you are reported missing if you are out of touch for 24 hours

wave particles A simple unified theory of everything
  Peter on 2011-07-07
If mass gravity is a curve of space time, it would seem reasonable to propose that charge is also a curvature in an analogous way. Charge demonstrates attraction as well as repulsion, so we then hypothesise that in the same way there should be a curvature of space time that exhibits repulsion.
Hopefully experiments to trap antimatter will reach the point that they can measure the response to gravity, but at the moment any effects of gravity are overwhelmed by the effects of charge in the experimental design.

Until we have ruled out antimatter exhibiting antigravity there is little point in proposing any other form of matter.

It doesn't seem reasonable to me to have so many different and conflicting aspects of matter in the current theories in vogue today

This walk is only for experienced hikers with a good head for heights. the path is steep and slippery in places, very rough in others.
There are occasional waymarks, but the path is not always clear. After heavy rain the path may be difficult to spot in places.

The walking time for a path like this varies a lot according to your experience and skill at navigation, and the speed at which you walk. Both times are correct

I've tried to get Tapioca for 3 weeks now - not at Tesco, Waitrose, Morrison or any of the local health food shops.

One of the best places to get Sago and Tapioca - very inexpensively, I might add - is Southall or any of the Indian shops.

Good luck and the recipe I have is different, but also makes a very yummy dessert

I was diagnosed with UC 17 years ago and has been on Asacol for a out 16 years until I started a GF diet. It has eliminated my UC symptoms and has improved my condition! My doctor still believes I do have UC but with the help of GF diet, it is well controlled until I eat gluten or dairy which seems to go hand in hand. I have had a few flare ups due to eating gluten and dairy and the only way together back to norm is taking my UC meds. I would then wean off once symptoms are gone. Since I seem to flare easily because of party foods and eating at restaurants. Flare ups have been very often. Now I just take 4 tabs of Asacol instead of 12 for maintenance, otherwise I have no wiggle room. I buy some of my snacks from Trader Joes or Whole Foods. I drink soy milk with Chex GF cereal for breakfast. Costco also has a variety of GF chips. It's not as hard as you think. It forces you to eat better! Good luck. Your condition WILL improve with this diet and dairy free as well.

I had extremely bad UC for two years that no medication seemed to help, nor did remicade, nor steroids. I had a colectomy and then the reversal to a j-pouch last year. I have now had severe pouchitis three times in 5 months. I began a gluten free diet 2 weeks ago and am now also removing all dairy and high fructose corn syrup. So far I haven't noticed any difference, but I also currently have a flare-up of severe pouchitis that my dr just gave me an antibiotic for.

My question is to anyone who has a j-pouch, how normal can i expect my bm's to get if this diet works and food is the culprit. Can I expect to return to normal bm's like I had before I developed UC? Any idea how long I need to give this diet to tell if it is going to work? I've heard anything from 3 weeks to 3 months.

Thank you in advance for any advise you can give me
