Auckland is a small city by world standards, with a very compact city centre.
This view of the city is from the top of North head, Devonport.
Even though Devonport is so close to the city centre, the view in the opposite direction shows the sandy beaches and well spaced houses on quiet streets. As the city is so small, it is best explored on foot. We stayed in Devonport and caught the ferry over to the centre of the city. Free city maps can be picked up at any visitor information centre. We walked up Albert Street befor turning left into Victoria Street East, then into Albert Park. Continue down through the University on Alfred Street, then Grafton Road takes you over a motorway and into the Auckland Domain. Paths wind their way up through gardens and woodland to the Museum at the top of the hill. This is an excellent museum for Maori culture as well as native animals and birds. Well signed walkways continue right across the Auckland peninsular. Extra map data is copyright Peter Thomson. Scripts are copyright of the original authors.
