Hamilton Gardens occupy a riverside setting on the south of Hamilton Town. They are quite extensive, and together with riverside walks make a good half day walking. The rose gardens in particular are quite stunning when in full bloom.
There are a series of small gardens, some excellent, which illustrate gardens from around the world. (Some are still under construction, others looked a little neglected ) The Japanese garden captures the quiet contemplation of a young visitor
The English garden captures the essence of a Jekyll garden but lacks the exuberance and density of planting. The Chinese garden has a magnificant gateway, and the turtle occupies a vantage point over the river. The Italian garden captures the formal style well This is a good base to go and see the Waitomo glowworm caves. The glowworms are beautiful seen from a silent boat in the darkness. There is a path opposite the entrance that leads up to this viewpoint. ( No photos are allowed inside the caves )
