Author: Peter () Email: Date: 2008/August/12 This walk from the top of the Penken gondola is excellent for the wild flower meadows. It is much easier to walk along to the Schrofenalm and then climb to the Wangalm before returning along the ridge. The alternative descending from the Wangalm is much more slippery and harder on the knees. This route is signed first to the Finkenberg midstation, but when this appears in sight, keep level - you can follow either the track contouring to the west, or the path just below it. They join further on and the path then crosses boggy ground on wooden tracks. Flowers here are excellent. You should turn up to the Wangalm at a gate with heavy metal weights tied to an old pylon. We continued down to the Schrofenalm, and then turned up past a little chappel. We climbed through a fence to reach an old path that came out on a track and headed up this until we rejoined the path up the ridge to the Wangalm. Flowers and butterflies on this section were spectacular. The views from the ridge back to the Penken are spectacular. Note that if you follow the ridge all the way you can take the chairlift back down to the gondola top station and avoid the final descent.
