Ramsau in Zillertal Gerlossteinalm Torhelm Brandberger Kar Brandberg

Author: Peter () Email: Date: 2008/August/12 This is quite an energetic walk of about 10 miles. The long descent is quite hard on the knees. This is one of the best walks for flowers in early August - the meadows as you approach the ridge before Torhelm are spectacular, as are the limestone pastures of the upper Brandberger Kar. We started up the single chairlift from Ramsau. Head up from the top of the lift following the signs for the paraglider launch platform. Pass this and continue up a gently climbing track through woodland. This turns into a path which then climbs more steeply and comes out just below the gondola up from Hainzenberg. Follow the track left that winds up to the north of the Gerlossteinwand. This path continues straight on where the path down from the Gerlossteinwand is on the right. The path continues undulating gently but generally climbing. Where the underlying rock is limestone there are flowers in profusion. Eventually the path reaches the ridge with views down into the next valley. Continue east along the ridge towards the Torhelm. Here there are flowers in profusion. Just below the Torhelm a clearly marked path drops right to contour round the head of the next valley. This is alive with buterflies and bees in the summer, and the richest wild flower meadows that we saw all week. The path descends beside a small lateral morraine below the bare limestone walls of Brandberger Kolm. The path now drops down to the hut Brandberger Kolmhause, flowers all the way. Below the hut the rock changes and flowers are much more sparse. The path is quite steep and worn in places. It crosses the end of the vehicle track and then continue to drop quite steeply, passing through very steep meadows to reach the road at Branberg beside the Guesthouse Thanner where the bus stops.
