This is an excellent area for walking, with a network of paths and open moorland. The scenery is very varied. There are many good free car parks scattered along the access roads.

We walk on Dartmoor and the Coast, with occasional trips further afield to Exmoor, Bodmin etc.

We mostly do circular walks, but the occasional linear walk. We have three groups of walks: 8 - 12 miles at an active pace, 5-8 miles at a slower pace, and under 5 miles.

We also organise walking weeks in the UK and abroad for our members.

For all walks you need stout footware, which should be waterproof except in a long dry summer.

Don't try longer walks in new boots! They should be worn on several shorter walks to mould to your feet and soften before serious use.

You also need a fully waterproof jacket and overtrousers. Weather can change quickly, and the national forcast is not always correct.

Two walking poles are very useful if you are not in your first youth - and much better than one stick. (remember to pick them up after a stop)

In colder weather you should have spare warm clothing, warm hat and gloves.

The moors can be arctic in winter and exposure is a serious risk if you are not properly dressed.

Most of the year you need good suncream and a sun hat. You can get burnt by the sun through a sea mist when you are out all day.

You need to carry water and a packed lunch ( except for the shortest walks).

Don't attempt the coast path if you suffer badly from vertigo.

If walking on your own make sure you have the 1:25000 landranger maps, a compass, and know how to use both. A GPS unit is useful, but only when you can use a map and compass. It is no substitute for that skill.

Accidents can happen. Any group out walking should have thought through their emergency procedures before they go out.

Make sure that somebody else has a good idea of where you have gone, and when you expect to be back. Take a mobile phone and report any change of plan. Make sure that person is informed as soon as you get back. Signals are mostly good up on ridges, but can be poor in steep valleys.

(Most rescue alerts happen because the group has changed its plans and the people at base start to get worried.)

If you do need the emergency services, give them a clear idea of exactly where you are and explain what has happened. Don't simply try and tell them what you want. They will decide which is the best way of assisting you.
