Dear Peter
I am planning to try and cross Dartmoor on foot in one day, from North to South and have been recommended to start from Belstone. I want to arrive late evening (9-ish), then set off first thing (6am-ish). I do not intend to cook, have a fire or need a shower etc - I just want to camp on some open ground, then set off.
Is this possible from Belstone ? If there is a place from which to obtain permission, even if I have to pay, I would be grateful for details. However, it is vital that I am right at the start of the walk, to ensure that I do not lose time.
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks.

Camping for one or two nights on the open land on Dartmoor is perfectly acceptable provided that you choose your spot sensibly and don't pitch your tent on farmland, on moorland enclosed by walls, within 100 metres of a road, on flood plains or on archaeological sites. You don't need permission or to pay.
There is flat dry ground if you walk out onto Watchet Hill, or take the track up the Taw valley towards the Irishman's Wall.
Do note the need to check when the firing ranges are open or to select a route that avoids the firing ranges.
