This is a series of walks selected to illustrate the range and variety of walks available in the Yorkshire Dales in the vicinity of Hawes.

They formed the basis of one weeks walking for the Newton Abbot Ramblers in June 2005.

Hawes is a small market town that has retained its individuality and appearance.

It has two outdoor shops, numerous places to eat, or buy a packed lunch, a small supermarket.

It was quiet through the week, but full of people at the weekend.

We all stayed in bed and breakfast accommodation, both in Hawes, and surrounding farms, which was excellent value for money.

We booked in advance for all evening meals as we wanted to sit as a group ( and we wouldn't have got in otherwise )

Walks:

Each walk includes a GPS track recorded with a Garmin eTrexLegend

Bainbridge - park on roadside, Cam High Road (Roman Road), turn down on the path to Bardale Head, Marsett - do stop to admire the wild flowers on the moor south of the vilage, Semmer water bridge, riverside path, then over bracken hill to Bainbridge.

Malham Tarn car park - free (rather rough!) Follow Pennine Way south to Mallam Cove, steps down to the Cove, south to Mallam village, continue south on Pennine Way, then turn east on path signed to Gordale. Above Janet's cave and waterfall, briefly continue on road before turning through campsite to Gordale Scar. Walk right up the waterfall base, but path is almost impassable at the moment. Return through campsite and take path west that climbs through fields, signposted to Mallam Cove. Cross the Mallam rakes road and continue until you can look down into Mallam cove again. Now head north to the old track (path) that leads up trougate. When in site of the carpark continue on path northeast and head down to mallam Tarn beside a small woodland. Follow the shore of the Tarn south back to the car park.

Horton in Ribblesdale - park on roadside beside station (not station car park). Cross railway line at station and follow path north of west up Sulber Nick over limestone pavement and grassland. Turn south at crossing paths for Sulber Gate. Go through the gate, then immediately turn left through wall (not as shown on map). Plant drops steeply down, check you can see ongoing path before proceeding. Path drops through dramatic limestone scenery into head of Crummack Dale. Pass Crummack Farm, then fork left on track to Wharf. Continue east on surfaced road and lookout for path heading up over fields towards Dry Rigg Quarry. [Note well - new maps are entirely wrong here This is not public access land. This is a very active quarry!!]Follow path signed east of quarry and follow round to Foxdale. Continue on path outside Arcow quarry, crossing over railway just before Cragghill Farm. Join the Ribble Way on the banks of the river and follow this pleasant riverside walk back to Horton.

Ribble Head to Hawes via the Dales Way and Pennine Way. This is a linear walk, so you need a vehicle at each end. Parking on roadside just south west of Gearstones, avoids road walk out from Ribble Head. Keep for a bright sunny day as you are walking this for the views, not the immediate scenery! This section of Cam High Road is in need of repair as it has been churned up by offroad vehicles. Follow the Cam High Road until it meets the end of the surfaced road at Cold Keld gate. Turn North onto a track at Kidhow gate, and continue on the Pennine Way right into Hawes.

Gunnerside - very limited parking at new bridge on road side. In the middle of village take path up east bank of stream. Look out for a sharp right turn just before a private garden. Continue up stream side through Birbeck Wood. Remnants of lead mining start to appear, and the west hillside is covered with flowers in the spring. At the hushes there are extensive (dangerous- keep out) mine workings. At this point the path is well above the valley floor. Continue upstream at the crossroads - don't drop down here. The path eventually reaches the stream at a small waterfall (no bridge) cross here and return by the track on the west bank, dropping down before the lime kiln to cross blind gill just below mine workings. The path up from here is well worn, and comes out on a track just above the lead mines. Follow the track west (don't take the north branch). As the track starts to drop down into east Grain keep a sharp look out for the path that leaves the track here to follow the north side of the valley down. We followed the good path down past Crackpot Hall. the other paths are narrower and can be slippery when wet. Here we continued on the track northwest to the bridge below Keld. Don't turn down by the riverside, continue up a steep hill before turning left at the signposts. At Birk Hill we branched left to walk down the valley bottom on smooth grassey paths, crossing a footbridge just before Muker, following the north bank of the river down to Ivelet and then on to Gunnerside.

Aysgarth - free parking on main road, or pay in car parks. Head into the church yard and take the path east from the church. Follow the riverside downstream. This comes out onto the road at Hestholme Bridge, then continues down the riverside all the way to Lord's Bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately turn back upstream on the north bank. The path runs through the field until it joins the main path at the junction in west wood (not up through the edge of the wood as shown on the map) After west wood the path crosses several fields to come out in the village of Redmire. Look out for the path signed to Castle Bolton at the north end of the village. Bolton Castle, enter by the north door - you can go through the cafe and shop without paying to enter the ruins. From the castle, head south on the naqrrow road, branching right on a path to Wheeling Bridge, then past High Thoresby and Hollins House. This path brings you through St Josephs wood past the Aysgarth Falls. Cross the bridge to return to cars.

Great article. In doing my family tree I found I am related to the many Dinsdales in Hawes and I and my family went to gayle near Hawes each summer to visit an old relative. Being a keen walker I love the area for lots lots more. What a lovely place. If you get chance the following site has lots to walk in the area:
