Walking the Isle of Wight

Coast Path from Yarmouth to the Needles and Freshwater Bay

Freshwater bay to Brightstone Beacon, return via Coast

From Godshill to Shanklin, Ventnor and return over the downs

Sponsors:

This is another excellent circular walk that contrasts open downland with a sandy coast line
About 12 miles.

There is free parking out of Freshwater Bay on the coast road east.
View looking back at Freshwater Bay from the car park.

The path runs up through the golf course just inland from the car park, marked as the Tennyson Trail on the map.

The views expand as you climb

Look out for the carpets of downland flowers

Cross the road in the dip at Pay Down and continue East

We turned off just before the viewpoint at Limestone Down, east of Brightstone.

View looking East

Looking back at the path we have followed along the ridge. taken from the path down to Brightstone.

After a late lunch stop in Brightstone, we walked down to the sea at grange farm

A good path follows the cliff top, but you can also walk along the beach at low tide. Note that there are not many access points - but there is a good exit point just before Freshwater Cliffs.

Loking back inland at the downland ridge

Cliff top view west

beach view west. The cliff is very soft and crumbling, but has many bands of fossils.

The exit point just before Freshwater Cliffs

The path now climbs back up towards the main road.

Looking back east from the main road.
