Walking the Isle of Wight

Coast Path from Yarmouth to the Needles and Freshwater Bay

Freshwater bay to Brightstone Beacon, return via Coast

From Godshill to Shanklin, Ventnor and return over the downs

Sponsors:

You can walk this as a circular walk starting at either Yarmouth or Freshwater bay where there is free parking away from the main tourist spots. From Yarmouth you can follow the path west along an old railway track before getting down to the shore at Brambles Chine. (If it is high tide you have to go up to the main road.) Follow the shore along the signed path until it leaves the shore up a flight of steps.

Totland bay

The path now climbs up over Headon Warren with vies out west to the Needles

Alum bay is a busy spot with a chairlift down to the beach, but it is a quick walk down and back for the walker!

The coloured cliffs are easy to see looking back after you have passed Alum bay.

The best views of the Needles are from inside the old Battery (national trust)

Climb back up onto the downs to walk east on short green turf.

Reaching Tennyson's monument above Highdown Cliffs.

Follow the path set back from the cliff down to Freshwater Bay

From Freshwater bay a pleasant path follows the Afton Marshes inland

and then the east bank of the River Yar

Returning to Yarmouth by an old mill.

Good morning,

First time visitors - going mid October - can you advise us if there are walks of say 12 miles.

Your help is much appreciated.

Regards David

There are walks that go round most of the coastline and up the main spine through the middle of the island. Paths join this central spine to both coasts. It is quite easy to use local transport to make linear walks of 12 miles, or to pick out circular walks of about 12 miles
